Learnings from the Mental Health Liaison Project

Families SA, Department for Families and Communities
Government of South Australia

The Mental Health Liaison Project (MHLP)commenced in April 2005 with the purpose of trialling a multi-disciplinary approach that would provide assessment and a `fast track' referral for parents experiencing mental health difficulties, with the aim of assisting the parents to care safely for their children.

In the MHLP a better understanding has been gained of the sometimes disparate views and ways of working between mental health services and child protection services and how this can lead to a detrimental impact on the client-families of child protection services. These views are explored in detail with case examples to demonstrate what the barriers to collaborative practice are.
