This presentation examines the Australian federal government's 2006/07 budget for its implications for women's wellbeing by scrutinising the impact of the budget on peace, security and women's safety and the relationship between the unpaid care economy and women's paid work. The argument is that if we applied a gender lens to the government budget and were able to make governments properly accountable for their budgets in these areas it would make a much more significant contribution to women's wellbeing (and by implication men's and children's) and to gender equality.
