The draft Strategy was launched by Environment Minister John Hill on 31 January 2006 at 'green' Mawson Lakes Primary School. Minister Hill also announced a new study would be commissioned by the State Government for CSIRO to provide South Australia with the most up to date information on how rainfall and temperature may change in the future.
"Our draft document, Tackling Climate Change: South Australia's Greenhouse Strategy, will guide the way we deal with the threat, with the results from the new study giving us a better indication of our state's position,'' he said.
"From this strategy action plans will be developed to combat climate change and help us to cope with the expected changes to our climate and our lifestyle - and even help our industries benefit."
The draft Strategy outlines a number of goals round the six key sectors - Community, Industry, Energy, Transport and Planning, Buildings and Natural Resources - as well as two additional areas of Leadership and Adaptation. An action planning process based on the Strategy will identify key priorities in different sectors to allow South Australia to reduce emissions, adapt to inevitable climate change and innovate to find new solutions.
