Online Briefing: Cities Under Stress - Urban Life and Extreme Weather

For most of us, cocooned by our office heating systems, city life seems untouched by our changing climate. But those vast buildings, air-conditioning systems and non-stop traffic, all help to make city temperatures higher than those in the surrounding areas. And as the weather gets wilder, cities too will need to adapt and change. This briefing brings together three experts to discuss:

  • How will the most vulnerable in our cities cope with more extreme weather events? On any given night it is estimated that over 120,000 people are homeless in Australia.

  • Can urban agriculture and the humble veggie patch play a role in our food security?

  • How can we use green spaces in our cities to help protect against weather extremes?
