Education and Skills in Southern Adelaide: Preparing for the Future

Kostas Mavromaras
National Institute of Labour Studies, Flinders University

This project explores the overall relationship between education attainment and economic growth, and presents detailed evidence on the levels of education and training in each of four Southern Adelaide Local Government Areas (LGAs): the City of Onkaparinga, City of Mitcham, City of Marion and the City of Holdfast Bay. The objective is to provide a data framework for setting specific education and training targets for Southern Adelaide. The principal source of information used in this project was the ABS 2006 Census of Population and Housing.

This Discussion Paper focuses on the core question of how much up-skilling is needed to aim
for in Southern Adelaide and how we can start thinking about the best way to achieve it.
We can break this question down into the following parts:

  • Southern Adelaide today
  • Gaps in our knowledge
  • Aspirations and benchmarking
  • Targets and feasibility
