Social capital has been posited as an important factor in the relationship between low socioeconomic status and ill health. In recent times, the concept of social capital has become one of the most popular exports from sociological theory into everyday language and has evolved into something of a `cure-all' for the problems and challenges that confront societies and their modern development. This paper examines the concept in detail and explores the literature around it.
