Compulsory income management has been criticised by a range of community organisations as being an expensive and inappropriate response to the problems faced by those receiving various forms of welfare payment. A bill currently before Federal Parliament seeks to extend a system of compulsory income management, initially introduced into select indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, to areas throughout Australia.

This report discusses the problems associated with income management and the possible implications for a large number of South Australian.

In addition to the report, the following factsheets have been produced:

  • Compulsory Income Management Factsheet #1: Implications for South Australia

  • Compulsory Income Management Factsheet #2: Implications for Aboriginal Communities

  • Compulsory Income Management Factsheet #3: Implications for Suburban Adelaide

  • Compulsory Income Management Factsheet #4: Implications for Small Towns and Communities
