Over many years the term `health' has been defined in various ways. Nevertheless it is widely acknowledged that health is a multi-dimensional concept that transcends the mere absence of illness.Governments in developed nations are increasingly embracing the concept of the social determinants of health and wellbeing, and are cognisant of the role they play in ameliorating the social impediments contributing to social inequity. Health promotions both in Australia and overseas are increasingly being targeted at those at greatest risk. However to recognise the impacts on South Australians' health of all government policies, across all portfolios, a more holistic approach to health policy development is needed.
