This review considers the economic, social and employment impact of locating prisons in rural areas. It focuses on US evidence primarily because most states embarked on large prison building programmes over the last three decades with a particular focus on locating prisons in rural areas. It also makes reference to new prison building programmes in Ireland and Britain.
