On the same level as anybody else: Supported Accommodation Demonstration Projects in South Australia

Krystyna Slowinski & Nancy Rogers
Department for Families and Communities, South Australia

This report summarises key findings and learnings from the early stage evaluations of seven Supported Accommodation Demonstration Projects established across metropolitan Adelaide and South Australian country regions since 2002.

The evaluations, conducted between December 2002 and January 2006, found that the Supported Accommodation Demonstration Projects filled a significant gap in the service system by providing quality accommodation and flexible support to participants with mental health or psychiatric disability issues. The services were highly valued by participants and contributed to improved stability and quality of housing, better management of mental health, and overall improvement in quality of life. A reduction in tenancy disruptions and demand for acute psychiatric services were also noted.
