Homelessness is a continuing public policy issue in Australia. Several official inquiries have been held and there are a range of programs to assist homeless people. In this context, reliable information is needed on the extent of homelessness, as well as information on the social characteristics and geographical spread of the population. Counting the Homeless 2001, is a research program concentrating on these questions with a focus on South Australia. The report was released in 2004.
