Supported by a $1.3m State Government grant, the Centre will act as a resource and catalyst for all sectors in advancing the State's objectives for science, technology and education, and will become an internationally known centre of excellence.

Dr Westwell is currently the Deputy Director of the multidisciplinary Institute for the Future of the Mind at Oxford University, where he works with its Director, Baroness Professor Susan Greenfield. Dr Westwell previously visited Adelaide as part of the Bragg Initiative, setting up links between South Australia and the Institute for the Future of the Mind.

The University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anne Edwards, described Dr Westwell as an excellent choice for Flinders and the State.

"Not only does Dr Westwell bring a global perspective to the Centre but he is an innovative thinker and has experience in working across the various levels of education and government in South Australia" she said.

Professor Edwards said the Centre builds on Flinders established track record in science education and the partnership with the Australian Science and Mathematics School.

The Flinders Centre will focus on communication, education and research, working with government departments, the education sectors, industry and the wider community Professor Edwards said.

The Centre will also encourage innovation in science education, while raising levels of scientific and technological literacy and interest in the population generally.

"The Centre is poised to play a major role in helping to build the culture of creativity and innovation in the State" Professor Edwards said.

Premier Mike Rann greeted Dr Westwell's appointment as a coup for science in the State.

"Martin's appointment at the Flinders Science Education Centre provides a valuable opportunity to further the links between Flinders University and the South Australian Government initiatives to promote science and science education" Mr Rann said.

Dr Martin Westwell will take up his appointment in September.
