The GFC, the high Australian dollar and growing competition from low-wage countries have acted like a wrecking ball, inflicting great damage on the manufacturing industry in Australia.
Since the GFC, about 30,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost in South Australia, while many more have disappeared in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales.
Holden is not the only mass manufacturer to be reconsidering its future in Australia. While the future for mass manufacturing is bleak, the prospects for the growth of advanced manufacturing linked to 3D printing, robotics and photonics are brighter.
