New bars to make Adelaide 'more vibrant'

ENTREPRENEURS will be able to set up small bars in Adelaide's CBD under new laws passed by the South Australian parliament.

With the new small venues licence, bars for up to 120 patrons can open from 11am to midnight, and licensees can apply for an extension to 2am.

The laws, passed on Tuesday night, will help make Adelaide "a more vibrant and more interesting place", Business Services and Consumers Minister John Rau said.

Entrepreneurs applying for the new licences will no longer face huge legal bills flowing from individuals or businesses objecting to their establishment, he said.

"It won't just be bars in the city that take up the option of a small venue licence, it could be restaurants, art galleries, live music venues and other new and interesting spaces in the city."
