In March 2002 the State Government announced a review into child protection in South Australia. Recent events had highlighted the need for an urgent, wide-ranging review of child protection legislation, services and practices. In South Australia, child protection reports to Department of Human Services have increased by 61% over the past five years adding considerable pressure on that agency's capacity to respond. [ View]

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) has until relatively recently been largely a hidden crime. In early 2001, Women's Health Statewide (WHS) undertook the role of `Interim Lead Agency for Coordinating Collaborative Responses to Adults who had been Subjected to Child Sexual Abuse'. As part of this role, WHS identified the need to conduct research to explore the current service needs of adult survivors and the organisational needs of workers and managers in providing services to adult survivors. This project aimed to identify the current service needs of adult survivors of CSA and the organisational needs of workers and managers who provided services to adult survivors. [ View]

Very few employers have policies regarding mature aged workers and most seem unaware of the implications of population ageing. This study of mature aged job seekers who need to find work found that they experience: age discrimination and stereotypes about older workers, problems with the job-search system, decay of skills, severe financial constraints (with implications for superannuation and long-term security), and serious human impacts such as loss of confidence, physical and emotional health problems, reduced quality of life, narrowed horizons, frustration, and problems with marital and family relationships. While the DEST initiative in funding (generously) efforts to make Values Education a core part of Australian schooling is welcome, we argue that as it stands the required `common values' approach cannot succeed in developing students' capacity for sound moral judgement.
