Obesity, Physical, Psychological and Sexual well-being: Implications for Ageing Men

The Second talk in the University of Adelaide's 2008 Research Tuesdays seminar series will be on Tuesday 11 March.

Gary Wittert is Mortlock Professor of Medicine and Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Adelaide, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and a member of the Hanson Research Institute and founding member of the Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men's Health. His research focuses on obesity and men's health.

Title: Obesity, Physical, Psychological and Sexual well-being: Implications for Ageing Men

Synopsis: Compared with women, Australian men have higher rates of physical and psychological disease and death, and are also less likely to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Major studies have found that men suffer from a high burden of reproductive health disorders, chronic physical and psychological disease, and a high prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and sexual and lower urinary tract dysfunction. These studies highlight the need for gender-focused health care at a practitioner level, and a specific men's health strategy at a public health level so that men are better educated about their health.
