Public Forum on Prison Overcrowding

Thursday, 28 February 2008, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Rydges South Park Hotel, 1 South Terrace, Adelaide

Offenders' Aid and Rehabilitation Services (OARS) is hosting a public forum on the topic of Prison Overcrowding. There are many factors contributing to the growth in prisoner numbers and our prisons are now struggling to cope with the overcrowding. What do we do until the new prison is built? What have other jurisdictions (interstate and overseas) done in response to overcrowding? To what extent do new prisons tend to grow prison numbers and risk renewed overcrowding? These are some of the questions facing us now and in the future. At this Public Forum, the Hon Stephen Wade MLC, Shadow Minister for Correctional Services, will outline some Liberal Party perspectives in relation to these issues.
