The Policeman's Eye
23 Feb 2005
Presented by Dr Philip Jones and Tim Smith
Philip and Tim present the remarkable story of pioneer Northern Territory police inspector, Paul Foelsche, whose photographic record of South Australia's colonial frontier will be displayed in the exhibition, `The Policeman's Eye'.
The exhibition juxtaposes Foelsche's beautifully composed landscapes and images of early Darwin with his intimate portraits of those Aboriginal people who were most affected by the advance of the northern frontier, which he policed. Our speakers reveal Foelsche's motives and methods, and propose him as one of Australia's foremost colonial photographers.
