Understanding globalisation of pharmaceutical consumption: order without laws?
Tuesday, 13 March 2007, 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm
Scots Centre (next to Scots Church), cnr. North Terrace and Pulteney Street, Adelaide.
Understanding globalisation of pharmaceutical consumption : order without laws? will be presented by Dr Nick Fox, Reader in the Sociology of Health and the Body, University of Sheffield.
Governance of science and technology has traditionally been a matter for national bodies, but the rise of both transnational companies and supranational governments such as the European Union has challenged this.
Meanwhile the Internet has enabled technology consumption across national boundaries. In this seminar, Dr Nick Fox, will explore how governance needs to be understood in this post-national order, with specific reference to pharmaceutical production and consumption.
Based on empirical research, Nick will argue that governance is largely managed outside legislation and consent by stakeholders is critical to good governance.
Dr Nick Fox is Reader in the Sociology of Health and the Body, University of Sheffield, UK. He has conducted extensive research on the impact of information on health technologies and pharmaceutical governance. Nick is a frequent visitor to Australia and is hoping to develop collaborative work on the governance and ethics of stem cell research and other health technologies.
