Licking Salinity - A sustainable future for the Riverland

Gerrit Schrale will discuss the Tri-State Salinity Project, 'Salinity Impact on Lower Murray Horticulture' being undertaken by a syndicate of Natural Resources Management research agencies in SA, Victoria and (western) NSW. The overall objective of the project is to determine how to manage the salinity in the root zone for safe production of horticultural crops with a minimum impact on the environment of the River Murray.

Geoff McLean will present a summary of the results of his economic assessment of the salinity impact on Lower Murray horticulture. The study calculates the impact of salinity on the value of production for seven major crops (Grapes, Oranges, Apricots, Peaches, Almonds, Carrots and Onions).

Jeff Parish will discuss the Central Irrigation Trust and in particular the overall challenges in managing supply and demand for water.

Tom Martin will provide his point of view as an independent irrigator and developer regarding the challenges for industry in growing their business within resource constraints.
