NILS Seminar Series: Job Mismatches and Labour Market Outcomes: Panel Evidence on Australian University Graduates

Tuesday, 21 September 2010, 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Free
Room 3.18, Level 3, Law & Commerce Building, Flinders University, Bedford Park

The twelfth NILS seminar for 2010 is a presentation by Zhang Wei (Flinders University) on the paper 'Job Mismatches and Labour Market Outcomes', co-authored by Kostas Mavromaras, Seamus McGuiness, Nigel O'Leary and Peter Sloane.

The paper examines the relationship of both educational and skills mismatches on pay, job satisfaction and job mobility. Using HILDA Survey panel data, the paper finds that overeducation and overskilling are distinct phenomena with different labour market outcomes and that their combination results in the most severe negative labour market outcomes. It also finds that the use of panel methodology significantly reduces the size of many relevant coefficients, questioning previous cross-section results and suggesting the presence of considerable unobserved heterogeneity which varies by gender.
