A Public Talk by current Adelaide Thinker in Residence, Peter Wintonick

hosted by the combined disciplines of Gender and Labour Studies, Politics and Media in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of

Peter will discuss the importance of independent media to campaigns for social justice and human rights. Technological changes have opened up a range of new ways ordinary people can document and campaign against rights abuses at both the local and international levels. This Public Talk is intended for anyone with an interest in media, social justice, and human rights both from within the University and the general public. It will include screenings of excerpts from Peter's own work and other relevant media.

About Peter Wintonick:
Born in 1953, Peter graduated from Algonquin College, Ottawa, has worked as a University lecturer in Film Studies and Film Theory at Concordia University, Montreal and is a regular guest lecturer at universities around the world. Peter has been a producer, director, critic, media activist and editor of independent film, video and next-media. His work spans a spectrum
which includes dramatic features, theatrical documentaries, educational and socio-political works. He is best know for co-producing and directing with Mark Achbar one of the most successful documentaries in Canadian history -
Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media - which played theatrically around the world in 200 cities and won 22 awards. He directed Cinéma Verité: Defining the Moment, about the Cinéma Verité revolution, and Seeing is Believing: Handicams, Human Rights and The News, with Katerina Cizek. Peter is President of Necessary Illusions, regularly contributes to international cinema magazines and is an advisor to a range of events and institutions, including Adelaide's AFF and AIDC, Amsterdam's IDFA, Montreal's New Cinema - New Media Festival, the Berlinale, the One World Festival in Prague, the Buenos Aires Film Festival and a newly formed festival in Armenia.
