CREd Oration with Ian Lowe: Education for Sustainability: Too Little, Too Late?
Thursday, 25 March 2010, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Free.
Basil Hetzel Building, City East Campus, UniSA
Professor Ian Lowe AO, Emeritus Professor of Science, Technology and Society at Griffith University in Brisbane, will deliver the Centre for Research in Education (CREd) Oration.
Sustainable futures will involve significant change. A sustainable society would not be eroding its resource base, causing serious environmental damage or producing unacceptable social problems. Our present lifestyle does not satisfy any of these criteria. We are wasting resources future generations will need, damaging environmental systems and reducing social stability by widening the gap between rich and poor. The presentation will discuss the cognitive basis of an education for sustainability which addresses these issues.
However this is not the whole story. A useful metaphor is Globo sapiens. We face the challenge to transform ourselves into teachers who are wise global citizens if we want to develop these attitudes in our students. We need to be on a learning journey to develop the characteristics of Globo sapiens. What these are and the necessities of engendering will conclude the presentation.
