This is a joint event with Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity and the Research Centre for Injury Studies at Flinders University.
It is common to see statistical information used in discussions about social determinants of health. For example, the final report of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health relies heavily on a wide range of health statistics in arguing its case. But is it legitimate to see health statistics as a social determinant of health? If so:
How do health statistics influence health?
What makes statistical information effective or ineffective as a social determinant of health?
What determines the existence, availability and quality of health statistics?
What can public health researchers and practitioners do to make statistical information more effective as a determinant of health?
This forum will provide an opportunity to engage with a prominent panel in a lively exploration of these and related questions.
